Allah Karim!  The Ramadan Festival at St Ethelburga’s

Tues 16 Sept 6pm til late

 

A unique night of Poetry Dhikr and spiritual Music  from Persia Senegal and  Pakistan was led by British based Poet Mahmood Jamal who began with a powerful  contemporary peice from his latest book of poetry called' You & I ' addressing the debate between extremists and the 'unknown citizen' . Couplets from Rumi and other mystic poets from the Muslim world set the tone for an evening which captured a mystical and warm atmosphere. Muslims and non Muslims shared in a spectacular Iftar banquet laid on by Sacred Roots, and sponsored by Arts Versa.
 
Mohsin Abbas put the evening in context highlighting the need for Spiritual Islamic expression to join the Creative Cultural movement amongst Muslims to create a platform for mainstream Muslims in Britain to eradicate extremism from all sections of British society
 
Sufi Dhikr by the angelic ladies from the MTO Shah Maghsoudi Owaisi Silsila was accompanied by serene Santoor and Daf instruments.Senegalese style Dhikr followed and
Abdullah Trevathan demonstrated the uplifting nature of Islamic meditation with the audience joining him in creating a cacophony of silence.the evening was concluded with the sublime poetry of Sufi Mystics of the Indian sub - continent; Sajid Ahmed Khan singing both Qawwali and Kafi.

Moroccan Music and Storytelling at Leighton House Museum

Wed 24 September

 

Let your imagination fly to worlds of magic and fantasy, humour and folly with Hassan Erraji, a master musician and storyteller from Marrakesh , Morocco . Hassan will be telling Berber mountain stories, Arabian folk tales and other fabulous fables that he wrote or learned from the elders of his community where this tradition of storytelling is part of everyday Moroccan life and culture.

 

Hassan will accompany his stories with captivating traditional music and songs, playing instruments including the oud (Arabic lute) Qanun (harp-zither) and Nay (bamboo flute).

The Night Of Power- The Recitation at The Islamic centre, Maida Vale
Friday 26th September 4pm-8pm

Join us for a Taste of Ramadan- Iftar on the eve of arguably the most auspicious day of the Muslim calendar Laylat al Qadir ‘The Night Of Power’ is reputed to be the moment when the Quran is revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (pbuh).  The mystical nature of this holiest of nights is explored through Poetry readings Zikir, Dua and the Visual Arts. The evening will provide insights into the world of the Djinn Angels the revelation and metaphysics from the Abrahamic faiths and the artistic and miraculous nature of the Quran.

Unheard Voices

A fantastic chance to see a professional script-in-hand performance of extracts of four plays written by talented young people from the Royal Court ’s playwriting project for young Muslims writers.

 

Exploring themes such as identity, the cultural divide and the role of women, these plays offer a highly entertaining and engaging glimpse into the lives of young Muslim Londoners.

 

Featured plays are Arab in the West by Osama Al-Tamimy, Shades by Alia Bano, The Next Step by Hasan Minhas and For God’s Sake by Siama Shah. 

 

Introduced by the director Ola Animashawun and followed by Q&A with the writers.

Islamic Geometry Workshop

Geometrical Patterns feature heavily in Islamic architecture. Islam transformed geometry into a major art form, using the circle as the basis for the generation of patterns to create a stunning variety of effects. 

 

This workshop will provide students with an insight into the history of Islamic Geometry Pattern and show you how to make your own beautiful geometric patterns.

 

The workshop will be led by Adam Suleiman Williamson, a successful sculptor/stone carver, calligrapher and Islamic pattern artist who has been commissioned by HRH the Prince of Wales and teaches in schools, colleges and museums internationally.

A Taste of Palestine

Experience the beauty, joy and passion of Palestinian music as you sample the delicious tastes of the Arab Levant. Hosted by virtuoso Palestinian singer, musician, broadcaster and local resident Reem Kelani accompanied by classical and jazz pianist Bruno Heinen.

 

Sumptuous home cooked Palestinian food (from sage tea and dates to Manakish spinach and the mouth-watering Hel-ba and Basbousa desserts) supplied by the Maramia cafe on Golborne Road .
